Quaker Weddings

Ours will be a wedding in the tradition of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). A Quaker wedding is a meeting for worship during which the couple says their vows in the atmosphere of quiet and reverence and before witnessing family and friends. Quakers believe that marriage is a binding relationship between two people entered into in the presence of God.

The meeting begins when the couple enters together and is seated. After a few minutes, and when they are ready, the bride and groom rise. Taking each other by the hand, they make their promises. When they are seated again the marriage certificate is brought to them to sign and then it will be read aloud. The meeting then continues in an atmosphere of silent worship. Anyone who feels led to share a thought, prayer or blessing is invited to do so. Those who stand and speak and those who share in the silence all contribute to the solemnity and joy of the occasion.

The meeting concludes when the designated person shakes hands with those sitting near by and then everyone shakes hands. All who are present will be invited to sign the certificate as witnesses of the marriage.
